Even the American Flag Needed a Rebranding

Flag Day often gets overlooked. From its humble beginnings to its current form of 50 stars and 13 stripes, the flag of the United States has gone through a lot of versions. Each phase of the flag’s design represents not only the growth of the United States but also the influence and evolution of graphic design over centuries.

Now you may be wondering, how in the world does this historical day have anything to do with graphic design? Well, not only does graphic design shape how we see and remember the American flag today, but it’s also been through its own “rebranding” journey, so to speak. 

 

Talk about client revisions… the American flag has evolved many times since its original creation – 26 times to be exact! 

Each version mirrors the shifting political landscape of the United States and new design techniques that have been adopted. Graphic design has been vital in shaping the flag’s look and symbolism, ensuring each version effectively represents the nation’s identity and values. The bold contrast between the blue and the red and white stripes creates a visually striking effect, making the flag easily recognizable and memorable.
